Blade Sharpening Basics: When, Why, and How Often You Should Do It
Sharp Blades Make the Difference
Whether it’s a mower blade, trimmer head, or snow blower auger, a sharp edge is what separates clean cuts from wasted effort. Calgary’s dry, dusty lawns and gravel-heavy yards make blades dull faster than you think.
At Arns Equipment, we sharpen blades year-round, and we see what happens when they’re left too long. Here’s what you should know about when and how to keep them sharp.
1. When to Sharpen
If you mow once a week, plan to sharpen your blades twice per season — once at the start and again halfway through. For larger properties or commercial crews, that might mean every 20 to 25 hours of use.
A dull blade tears grass instead of cutting it, leaving frayed edges that turn brown. You’ll also notice your mower working harder, using more fuel, and vibrating more.
2. Signs It’s Time
-
Grass looks uneven or shredded after mowing
-
The mower leaves streaks or patches
-
You see nicks or flat spots on the blade edge
-
You need more passes to get the same result
If that sounds familiar, it’s time to either sharpen or replace the blade.
3. How to Sharpen Properly
You can use a file or bench grinder at home, but the key is maintaining the right angle and balance. Unbalanced blades cause vibration that can damage your mower’s spindle bearings.
That’s why our Arns Equipment service team uses precision balancing equipment. We’ll grind your blades to the correct manufacturer angle, balance them, and reinstall them so they perform like new.
4. How Often for Other Tools
Trimmers, hedge clippers, and chainsaws also need regular sharpening. Chainsaw chains, for example, should be touched up every few tanks of fuel. Using a Stihl sharpening kit or dropping by our shop for a quick grind keeps cuts clean and safe.
5. Replace When Needed
If the blade is cracked or worn thinner than the manufacturer’s specs, it’s safer to replace it. We carry OEM blades for Toro, Cub Cadet, and Stihl equipment, so you can get the exact fit.
A sharp blade saves fuel, reduces wear, and makes every job faster. If you’re not sure how your blades are doing, stop in at Arns Equipment Calgary. We’ll inspect them on the spot and get them sharpened right — because when your tools cut clean, your work looks better.
