Spring in Calgary: Outdoor Projects You Can Start in March
Calgary’s March Weather Can’t Decide — But You Can
If you’ve lived in Calgary long enough, you know what March feels like. One day it’s snowing, the next day you’re in a hoodie clearing the driveway. While the ground might still be cold, March is the perfect time to start outdoor prep work and get ahead of the spring rush.
At Arns Equipment, we start seeing the first wave of homeowners come in this month for tune-ups and tool checks. Here are the projects we usually tackle ourselves once the Chinooks kick in.
1. Clean Up Gravel and Debris
When the snow melts, all the sand and gravel left from winter sanding ends up in driveways and lawns. A Stihl BGA 57 blower makes quick work of that mess. Sweepers and blowers are faster than rakes and help prevent that grit from killing grass once things start growing again.
If you’re cleaning big areas, a backpack blower like the Stihl BR 600 handles sidewalks, curbs, and even light gravel patches without tiring your arms.
2. Check and Prep Your Mower
You don’t have to wait until May to get your mower ready. Calgary’s service centres fill up fast once the first warm weekend hits. Bring your mower in now for sharpening, oil changes, and air filter checks.
We tune up Toro, Cub Cadet, and Honda mowers all spring long. Our techs will check spark plugs, belts, and deck balance so you’re not fighting a rough start when it’s time for the first cut.
3. Trim Trees and Shrubs Before Budding
Early March is still safe for pruning most trees and shrubs in southern Alberta. Trimming before new growth begins reduces stress on the plant. A Stihl chainsaw or pole pruner makes it easy to clean up storm-damaged branches.
If you’re unsure what to trim, stop by our shop — we can recommend the right size and type of saw for your yard.
4. Clean Outdoor Furniture and Hard Surfaces
A light-duty pressure washer is perfect for removing salt and dirt from decks, fences, and outdoor furniture. Calgary’s freeze-thaw cycles leave a layer of grime you won’t notice until the sun hits it. A quick wash with a pressure washer gets everything looking fresh again.
5. Schedule Your Service Appointments Early
Whether it’s your trimmer, mower, or blower, now is the time to book your maintenance slot. Once April hits, everyone remembers at the same time. At Arns Equipment, our Calgary service team is already handling early spring prep jobs — tune-ups, carb cleanings, and blade sharpening.
